SIDAREC, Nairobi, Kenya, Judged as Overall Site Winner of the 2007 AMD Open Architecture Challenge
The Global Studio LLC's “Community Technology Hub” for SIDAREC Wins Overall Design Competition Award
AMD and Architecture for Humanity (AFH) have announced the winning locations and architectural design submissions in the 2007 AMD Open Architecture Challenge. The overall winning design, to be built in Nairobi, Kenya, for Slums Information Development and Resource Centres (SIDAREC), is based on the submission by The Global Studio LLC, an architectural team from Seattle, WA, USA.
Both SIDAREC and The Global Studio were officially announced winners during the 50x15 Africa Partner Summit in Cape Town, South Africa on June 3, 2008.
The new SIDERAC community center will feature an Internet Café, public walk-up computers, a recording studio, and a dedicated classroom for computer-based job skills. Technology by AMD and collaborator companies will also be provided for the health clinic on the property.
In addition to the 2007 AMD Open Architecture Challenge overall winners SIDAREC and Global Studio, winning locations and designs were chosen for two regional sites: in South America (Ecuador), The Kallari Association; In Asia (Sanfe Bagar, Nepal), Nyaya Health.
About the 2007 AMD Open Architecture Challenge
The Open Architecture Challenge was an open, international design competition to develop not one but many solutions for building sustainable, multi-purpose, low-cost technology facilities for those who need them most. Three community partners were selected and each site posed a unique set of design constraints and opportunities. While the needs of each client were unique, the hurdles they face in embracing technology to offer access to education, healthcare and the global marketplace are shared by millions of people in communities all over the world.
AMD's Role in the Challenge
In designing the structure for a digital inclusion center, several key areas need to be considered in respect to the technology used and the people welcomed to use it. AMD has a proven methodology for deploying technology in high growth regions that includes a unique ecosystem approach consisting of the following areas: power, connectivity, devices, content, financing, expertise, and structure design.
AMD and 50x15 work with AFH to define the technology needs and requirements that should be considered when building a technology center based on our proven learning lab methodology. This includes all regional considerations such as power, environmental conditions, connectivity, devices, wiring, access to communications, security, and personal comfort. In addition, 50x15 aims to provide a technology expert to consult with the architects and community leaders to ensure that technology selected will best serve the needs of the community.
